Models can't make hard sell look attractive
by Phil Rosenthal

No wonder the "winners"--always a suspect term when it comes to TV reality shows--on "America's Next Top Model" are all but doomed for obscurity.

Current top models aren't exactly wowing the nation.

Heidi Klum, Alessandra Ambrosio, Selita Ebanks, Izabel Goulart, Miranda Kerr, Karolina Kurkova, Adriana Lima and Melissa Miller strutted around in their undergarments the other night on CBS' "The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show," and the nation at large sighed.

The annual program-length ad for the PJs and skivvies chain also featured the reunited Spice Girls, will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas and Klum's hubby, Seal. Roughly 7.5 million people tuned in Tuesday.

That's about 700,000 viewers more than ogled last year's "Secret" infomercial-- and more than "Top Model" itself averages--but it looks dangerously thin next to the 14.6 million CBS viewers who earlier Tuesday caught the latest airing of the much-beloved 1964 Rankin/Bass chestnut, "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer."

That's right. Rudolph and Clarice, Hermey the Misfit Elf and Yukon Cornelius, Sam the Snowman and the Abominable Snowman attracted 7.1 million more people than the supermodels. The "Secret" fashion show got outpranced by the flying caribou with the surgically unenhanced honker.

You might even say "Rudolph" glows. And Heidi, Alessandra, Izabel, Selita and the rest of the undie models, for all their charms, barely cast a shadow.

It's a biological given that sex sells.

What doesn't sell so well is selling.

Six years removed from the first of these "Secret" exercises-- the debut 2001 edition drew about 12 million viewers--the would-be audience knows the pitch down cold and is starting to say bye-bye to buy buy. A wardrobe malfunction might spice things up. Trotting out the Spice Girls won't.

CBS even tried to hype the "Secret" show on an episode of its sitcom "How I Met Your Mother" eight nights earlier, having characters attend the "Victoria's Secret Fashion Show" after-party. The sitcom drew 400,000 more viewers than the actual "Secret" special, but about 600,000 fewer viewers than its season average.

The best sales jobs are subtle. Maybe you noticed the Sanyo Sprint phone and Ford truck that figured prominently on NBC's "Heroes" the other night, as noted by iTVX, an outfit that tracks these things. Maybe not.

Next best are practically blunt instruments, like the recent "30 Rock" that shilled for Verizon Wireless until Tina Fey turned to the camera and asked, "Can we have our money now?"

With TV networks desperate to wring every last dime out of programming and advertisers wary of viewers skipping or ignoring the old-style commercials that have propped up U.S. television for the past 60 years or so, there is increasing reliance on branded product integration in shows, upsetting some in the creative community and more than a few in the audience.

"Would we have wanted our memories of 'Casablanca' to include [Humphrey] Bogart saying to Ingrid Bergman as they say goodbye: 'You're part of his life, the thing that keeps him going. Now get on that plane and enjoy United's nonstop, three-class service to Paris with seats that recline to a full 180 degrees,' " the Other Phil Rosenthal, the one who created "Everybody Loves Raymond," complained to a House committee earlier this year, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

There has been talk that the Federal Communications Commission might vote this month to open an inquiry on whether there is enough disclosure when marketers pay to get their wares and branding messages integrated into programs, as well as a discussion of whether new rules are needed.

After all, it doesn't do much good to stick disclaimers on the end credits of programs if the end credits are barely visible, as has become custom in recent years. But no one wants the disclaimers to be too disruptive.

The bottom line is plugs--adequately labeled or not--won't bring in bucks if the programming around them isn't interesting enough to hold viewers' attention through the sales spiel.

Fail to entertain, and not even Heidi Klum can make it attractive.

Kate Hudson and Alessandra Ambrosio Go White for the Holidays

It's winter and the stars are bundling up in style. Last night Kate Hudson and Alessandra Ambrosio hit the Gramercy Park hotel for the Dolce & Gabanna fragrance launch party.

The snow flakes were both wearing short white fur coats. We must admit it’s a great choice unlike the typical dark fall colors. The only thing were hoping, is that the jackets were faux fur.

Stefano & Domenico’s Big Night

Kate Hudson, Lisa Airan, Mischa Barton, Alessandra Ambrosio, Genevieve Jones, Jason Lewis, Eva Mendez, Emily Mortimer, Molly Sims, Anne Hathaway and the like gathered together last night on the Gramercy Park Hotel’s rooftop to celebrate Dolce & Gabbana’s new men’s scent.

After an incredible four-course spread of frisee salad, butternut squash soup, lobster or steak and chocolate courant, the well-heeled crowd lined up to congratulate the designer duo of Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce, as well as the recently-appointed face of Dolce & Gabbana’s The One for Men: Matthew McConaughey.

This is actor’s first step into the world of fashion — with a hard body and charming smile like his, we hope McConaughey decides to stay for awhile.

Celebrity Watch: Victoria's Secret Model Alessandra Ambrosio at Dolce & Gabbana party

Alessandra Ambrosio attended the Dolce & Gabbana party at the Grammercy Park Hotel in New York Tuesday, December 4, night. The event was held to mark the brand's latest boutique on Madison Avenue and the launch of its new men's fragrance campaign.

The 26-year-old Brazilian supermodel looked 'angelic' in a white strapless mini dress with a silver sequined banded waist showing a lot of her well toned legs. An exquisite white knit wool jacket with fur added to her allure even if it didn't keep her very warm.

Ambrosio shares a New York City apartment with her lawyer sister Aline. She was recently spotted on a date with an unidentified male.

Hottest Angel

Is there a better early Christmas present than the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show? Some of the world's most beloved beauties strut their oh-so-hot stuff downtown the catwalk, scantily clad in bras, panties and other strange articles of clothing that offer a sneak peek at their most treasured assets. This was the first time in a long time that Gisele Bundchen wasn't involved in the show (it has been suggested that she pulled out of her contract with the company for allegedly not getting paid enough). But there was still plenty of eye candy to indulge in, including the likes of Alessandra Ambrosio, Izabel Goulart, Miranda Kerr, Adriana Lima, Heidi Klum, Karolina Kurkova, Marisa Miller, and Selita Ebanks. But, the question on everyone's mind is: Who's the hottest angel?

Alessandra's Guy Tries to Keep His Victoria's Secret

If your girlfriend was Victoria's Secret hyper-hottie Alessandra Ambrosio, how would you react if some dude came up and wanted his picture with your girl?

Probably a lot like this guy -- her current paramour, whose name we didn't catch -- who tried to pry Ale away from an eager fan as they slid out of Butter and into a waiting cab.

Still, her fella was magnanimous enough to let the fan have a little piece of Ambrosio ... at least photographically.

Have yourself a stylish little Christmas

BEFORE YOU get bombarded with holiday-driven articles on shopping and style, I decided to put in my yearly Yuletide two cents on the world of Christmastime fashions — in my own special way.

The first thing that comes to mind when the words "Christmas fashions" are uttered is a pleasantly plump man in a red suit who squeezes through your chimney and leaves gifts under your Christmas tree. This isn't exactly haute couture.

There are things that define style for the season. Red and green makes up the color palette, scarves drape around our necks with Yuletide flair and joyous novelty sweaters crafted out of puff paint and glitter adorn the backs of elementary school teachers across the nation.

Beyond that, there aren't any Christmas fashion icons whom we can adore — until now. Here is a list of some favorite style moments that have Christmas sewn between the seams.

The burlesque lamp in "A Christmas Story"

Besides young Ralphie's quest for a Red Ryder BB Gun, the star of this movie is, by far, the memorable lamp fashioned out of a mannequin leg clad in fishnet stockings. The "fra-gee-lay" piece of kitsch not only caused a stir in the Parker household, but it also gave Ralphie a lesson in female anatomy.

It's tacky. It's vulgar. It's stylish. It's Christmas. I love it.

'Tis the season to show some skin.

Nothing says "Merry Christmas" like a bunch of scantily clad jingle belles.

More often than not, the annual "Victoria's Secret Fashion Show" (it's on tonight!) has top models prancing down the runway in barely-there lingerie that has been trimmed with Christmas flair.

Last year, models were snow bunnies. The year before, models Gisele Bundchen and Alessandra Ambrosio wore bra and panties that looked like something Mr. and Mrs. Claus' naughty granddaughters would wear.

In the movie "Mean Girls," the plastic A-listers (played by Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert and Amanda Seyfried) performed "Jingle Bell Rock" in short red vinyl skirts and busty tops. Two things were missing to complete this skanky — I mean — Santa look: clear heels and a pole.

The Cosby sweater

There is no way around it. The holiday season isn't complete unless someone in your family wears the infamous "Cosby" sweater.

The primary characteristics that define a Cosby sweater are: It is knit, has an exaggerated geometric print and features loud, obnoxious colors. Whether it is large or small scale, the print can come in many forms, but it has to be pleasantly unappealing.

If you need a point of reference, watch Cliff Huxtable in any episode of — you guessed it — "The Cosby Show."

The "chillest" guy of the season.

The ubiquitous snowman has to be the beacon of style when it comes to the winter season. He (or she) proves that less is more.

The snowman demonstrates that all you need to stay stylish during Christmas is a scarf (preferably a chunky wool cable knit), a top hat, a corn cob pipe and a carrot for a nose.

The woman behind the jolly man.

Let's face it, Santa Claus has no time to think of style. He's so busy checking his list (sometimes even twice) that he is unable to design or even shop for his own clothes, let alone have the creative know-how to create such an iconic look.

This is where Mrs. Claus comes in.

Don't get me wrong, I love Santa. He has given me some great gifts, but I am sure that he is anything but a dapper man. This may be a snap judgment, but sometimes I have to question his work ethic.

First off, he has a bunch of elves make his toys in a North Pole sweatshop. Second, he forces a group of reindeer (with a self-conscious red-nosed creature leading the way) to tug around his sled in the wee hours of Christmas Eve — but this has nothing to do with his sense of style, so we will let all this slide.

The boots, the wide belt (those are so hot right now), the patent leather boots (probably Ferragamo) and the signature hat — I don't think Santa thought of that all on his own. I think we all have Mrs. Claus to thank for that signature outfit.

Jessica Simpson and Two Angels -- Hookers in Moscow?

They may be big name A-listers in America, but Victoria's Secret models Karolina Kurkova and Alessandra Ambrosio, and even Jessica Simpson are merely women of the night -- in Russia!

In the naughty section of the Moscow Times are ads for escorts, complete with photos -- of these three stars! According to the ad, Kurkova's working name is Kristina, Ambrosio's is Masha and both are available 24 hours a day. Hot damn! If it's really Jessica, that would explain why her name is Lena; it has only two syllables -- something she'd be able to remember.

Hanging with (funny) supermodels on the 'How I Met Your Mother' set
by Leah Greenblatt

You know how people always say that celebrities seem smaller in person, and disappointingly normal? This does not apply to Heidi Klum (pictured, left). Or any other Victoria's Secret model, for that matter. Set your self-esteem lasers to sad, lady readers, because they are, indeed, as lithe of limb, as sparkly of lip, and as shiny of hair as any teenage boy's PG-13 dream. Also, they can be funny. On purpose. I learned all this and more on the Los Angeles set of How I Met Your Mother, as the cast and crew filmed their November 26 episode with several special guest stars. I also got my very own script (whee!), and director's chair (with the makeup artist's name on it! But still exciting!), from which to watch them tape the elaborate Victoria's Secret fashion show after-party that caps the episode. But let's allow star Neil Patrick Harris (pictured, center), who plays Barney, the show's lovably psychotic lady's man, fill you in on the plot:

"Last season," he explains to EW, "we did a whole long riff on how everyone lost their virginity, and the understanding was that Barney would have lost his in an incredibly awesome way, with four chicks when he was, like, 12 or something. But it turns out it was actually with his mother's 57-year-old, Menthol-smoking friend Rhonda, and he was 23.

"This was granola Barney," he elaborates, "very young and wide-eyed and working in a coffee shop, and he worked with this girl and she dumped him. So his brother helps him get laid by Rhonda. Then it turns out that his brother told her to claim that he rocked her world, which kind of catapulted Barney into becoming the Lothario that he thinks he is. So when he finds out about his brother, it throws everything off-kilter at the most inopportune time-a Victoria's Secret show."

Shameless ratings ploy? Probably, and a blatant network cross-promotion as well (CBS will also air the real upcoming VS runway show Dec. 4), but—surprise!—the girls sail through multiple takes like pros, trying out different line variations and managing to somehow come off both sexy and demure in towering stilettos and tiny wisps of dresses that wouldn't cover a dinner plate, let alone a grown woman. Almost across the board, the girls don't know much about the show. "We travel too much," says Brazilian Alessandra Ambrosio, whipping back her long, chocolatey mane. "It is only programs on airplanes, you know?" And even Klum admits between takes that Dora the Explorer is pretty much the only thing (other than Project Runway, we presume) that gets regular play in her toddler-filled house. Still, they all throw themselves into it. VS Angel and Sports Illustrated swimsuit star Marisa Miller, admits, "It's so cool just to watch and learn how they do it, and to get a chance to go beyond still pictures and actually be speaking lines. I'm going to make my whole family watch this, for sure."

The (mostly) first-time actresses should be proud, says Harris. "I was pleasantly surprised. Some of them had never spoken a scripted line before. I expected they would come in robotic, but they seemed to be enjoying themselves. Heidi was great—boy, she ad-libbed all over the place. She convinces me to go back and confront Rhonda, in order to reclaim my mojo." Indeed, Klum, in a torrent of inscrutable German, makes the onlookers (there is no studio audience on HIMYM) and party extras laugh into their prop cocktails take after take. Barney, of course, having lost all his game, merely manages to make a spectacular fool of himself (boobie jokes galore) in front of the girls, until Heidi takes pity on him and guides him back to safety, a sort of Supermodel Yoda.

Also along for the ride? Buddies Ted (Josh Radnor, pictured, right) and Marshall (Jason Segel)—there mostly to unsuccessfully run interference on Barney's spectacular flame-out with model after model. "It's not the worst job in the world," Segel says with a smile, "Working with these women." Indeed, with the show's female regulars off-set for the day, he snack-cheats on TV wife Lily (Alyson Hannigan), sneaking off with Aussie model Miranda Kerr to craft services to grab some onion dip and delicious little crispy potato chips. "It makes your breath kind of funky," Kerr confides, "but it's so good!" Fortunately (or maybe not so much for the male cast members), there are no kissing scenes in this week's script—and fortunately for me, they leave me some dip. Two thumbs up, CBS catering!

At the end of the day, the models begin to droop (they're basically doing what the other actors have done all day, but in five-inch heels and with constant hair and makeup touch-ups), and the party extras talk quietly amongst themselves. Klum, still flawless in a sparkly metallic sheath, playfully demands that Segel bring her something sweet from the snack bar, now juggling cell phone calls and interviews by various visiting entertainment programs on the show's bar set, while Ambrosio rushes off to catch a 6 p.m. flight, and Harris types intently into his laptop at a desk on the living room set. "I have to say," he grins, "it was incredibly bizarre and sad to have to be that much of a tool in front of the most gorgeous women in the world all day long. But we have a pretty good group here, don't you think?"

Doogie Hits Mother-lode
by Bill Harris

Doogie, you crazy kid.

What have you got yourself into now?

Well, the former Doogie Howser, M.D. -- namely, 34-year-old actor Neil Patrick Harris -- will find himself in the company of a bevy of Victoria's Secret models tomorrow night on a new episode of How I Met Your Mother (CBS, E!).

Now, Doogie would have been too young to really appreciate this.

And in real life, Harris is gay, which obviously would negate the impact.

But as for Barney Stinson, who is Harris' character on How I Met Your Mother, this truly is a wet dream come true.

Or is it?

The episode is titled The Yips, and it has nothing to do with a golf game gone bad. As it turns out, infamous ladies-man Barney loses his sexual mojo just after receiving his invitation to an exclusive Victoria's Secret party.

Models making cameos tomorrow night include Heidi Klum, Marisa Miller, Miranda Kerr, Adriana Lima, Selita Ebanks and Alessandra Ambrosio. Sheesh, Barney ... bad timing!

Harris, conversely, has enjoyed some pretty good timing throughout his acting career.

While eyebrows were raised when he accepted what initially appeared to be only a bit part when How I Met Your Mother debuted in the fall of 2005, the affable Harris subsequently has received an Emmy Award nomination for his portrayal of Barney.

"Growing up in the business from my early days, people sort of looked and pointed and acknowledged that I was this little kid actor," Harris said. "But now that I'm grown up, people come up to me and actually talk about specifics of the show, their favourite episode. They ask things like, 'When are you getting slapped again?' "

That's a reference to a second-season episode titled Slap Bet. Needless to say, Barney lost.

"So that makes me feel like people not only are enjoying the show, but they actually are watching it," Harris said.

Harris formally came out of the closet late last year, and if there were any concerns that it would impact his character's status as a chick magnet, they quickly were dispelled. Harris simply is an extremely likable and effective comic actor, and when he's playing Barney, you have no trouble believing he is Barney.

Harris admitted he did not think the character of Barney was going to end up stealing How I Met Your Mother -- and we mean stealing in a good way.

"From the pilot, Barney got straight-razor-shaved and went laser-tagging and smoked cigars and he was very boisterous and outgoing, with catchphrases all over the place," Harris said. "So I think he was kind of the Fonzie guy in the pilot."

Fonzie, of course, stole Happy Days, too.

"But I love it," Harris added. "It's great. A supporting role on this gives you a life. You're not working every day and every scene all the time and feeling beat up about it.

"We have a really nice work schedule, the workload is evenly distributed, and the comedy makes me laugh out loud. What better job is there than that?"

Well, as far as we're concerned, there's no job that can't be made better by Victoria's Secret models.

This model is Alessandra Ambrosio, a Brazilian actress who has curls pinned up on the sides to give a perfect demonstration of how the pros set in those ever popular vertical curls.   While we are not able to apply these without help usually, it's comforting to know that curling irons help to give a similar look.   Your vertically applied curls can be pinned to cool as well when the iron is removed.   Note the big curl on top which will give lift and fullness in this area.

XMAS COMES EARLY IN VICTORIA'S SECRET SHOW

The annual Victoria's Secret Fashion Show was held yesterday at Los Angeles' Kodak Theatre, bringing with it some holiday cheer for men who've been both naughty and nice.

The wintry holiday theme of the US$10 million ($14.5m) runway spectacle ensured that German supermodel Heidi Klum stole the show dressed up as a gigantic snowflake.

Other Victoria's Secret 'Angels' were also looking sinful.

Adriana Lima was togged out as a sexy Santarina, Selita Ebanks wore a Christmas tree cloak and Karolina Kurkova portrayed a dove with over-the-top wings.

Others were seductively sheathed in glittery baubles, shiny bows and red-and-white North Pole garb, while 20 models were turned into decorations on a 6m-tall Christmas tree for the grand finale.

All of which makes these Victoria's Secret spokesmodels' recent claims that they suffer from fat and ugly days just like the rest of us rather difficult to believe.

'I have a lot of ugly days and bad moments - we don't just roll out of bed and look like this. We aren't machines or dolls,' Czech knockout Kurkova told Foxnews.com as the lingerie label's luscious ladies received a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame earlier this week.

'But when I feel like this, it is important for me to exercise and feel strong. I try to eat well and I don't diet - if I feel like chocolate then, I will have some chocolate.'

Her fellow 'Angel' Ebanks from

the Cayman Islands, however, prefers hibernation.

She groaned: 'Ugly and fat days are the worst, especially when you know you have to (take your clothes off).

'I have some pretty bad days when I wish I could crawl back into bed, but I'm so grateful for my job that I just get on with it.'

Brazilian beauty Izabel Goulart added: 'Who doesn't have ugly days? I definitely do sometimes. But you just have to keep up a good energy and good mood to get through it.'

Goulart also insists she and her bosom buddies have brains that are bigger than their bustline.

'We aren't just girls who pose in lingerie - we can interact with people and we are very intelligent.

'We are pretty but we have great personalities, this brand really allows everybody to see that side of us.'

But when it comes to bringing sexy back, Project Runway star Klum prefers to be candid about the fact that she also needs help.

'Of course, I have ugly days, but that's why I have so many makeup people and people to do our hair and give us clothes,' she admitted. 'We could never look like this on our own.'

Brazilian bombshell Alessandra Ambrosio added: 'I have so many days when my hair is not good or my skin is bad or I have a little belly. But thankfully... We have a lot of assistance.'

However, fellow Brazilian Lima feels she is picture-perfect every day - an attitude that all women should embrace.

She retorted: 'What is an ugly day? Please name it. I am just always happy and grateful for my amazing job and my healthy family. I am never ugly.'

Spice Girls heat up Victoria Secret's show

The reunion of the Spice Girls was definitely the highlight of last night's Victoria Secret Lingerie Fashion Show at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.

If you don't count a runway littered with gorgeous half-naked models like Heidi Klum, Alessandra Ambrosio and Karolina Kurkova wearing thongs, corsets, thigh-high stockings, peacock-, pheasant-, goose- and turkey-feather wings, crystal-covered bras, and teetering on stiletto boots and red-soled Christian Louboutin platform heels.

Scary, Sporty, Ginger, Baby and Posh wore WWII-inspired outfits ('40s-style pencil skirts, padded shoulder jackets and blouses with jaunty triangle field caps) for their first song, "Stop." And their enthusiastic performance proved they're still packing plenty of Girl Power.

Compared to today's pole danceresque choreography, the Spicettes' dance moves felt a bit dated. Even though they were light-years ahead of Britney Spears' somnambulistic VMA comeback, their moves looked a little Backstreet Boys-ish. Maybe they should spring for a new choreographer. That up-down shoulders shrug is so last decade, and there were times when they reminded me more of the Andrews Sisters. "And for our next number, 'The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B!' "

After a montage of clips showing highlights of their former career -- their arrival in the U.S., kissing Prince Charles, appearing at Cannes -- the girls did a second song that certainly brought the upbeat mood to a grinding halt. Wearing Roberto Cavalli gowns, they sang "Friendship Never Ends" while standing like statues in prolonged fashion model poses. Yawn. Hey, Spicettes! The Angels are up there to pose provocatively, not you! You're supposed to dance!

The best news of the night? Victoria Beckham smiled! And for the first time in years, she looked like she was having a jolly good time. So was the audience, which included Stacey Keibler, Ryan Seacrest, Jeremy Piven, Lauren Conrad, Hayden Panettiere, Eva Longoria, Rebecca De Mornay, Dean Cain, Steve Bing sitting with Brad Grey, and stylist Jessica Paster.

Will I. Am, filling in for Kayne West, who canceled because of his mother's death, appropriately sang his hit, "I Got It From My Mother." Although considering that West's mother died a day after reportedly undergoing liposuction, the lyrics -- "Where you'd get that body, baby? I got it from my mother" -- might not have been the best choice.

Seal, wearing a sparkly silver suit, sang a song off his new album that he wrote for Heidi (on their wedding day). Later in the show, Heidi joined him in a duet of sorts that also appears on the new album. I'd been told the reason Heidi didn't talk to reporters on the line was because she "couldn't talk." But she seemed to whisper along with Seal pretty convincingly. And then they kissed. Awwww.

This was also Klum's big comeback. She'd not walked the VS runway for quite some time because she was busy having babies. And after two kids, she certainly held her own up there, next to the amazingly lithe younger generation of Victoria's Secret Angels.

If you just can't wait until Dec 4 to see the VS show on CBS, here's a preview of the models, the singers and the wild sexy lingerie fashions in the Red Carpet Rewind Gallery.

Gold Stars All Around for The Angels

The Victoria's Secret Angels ditched their pink aviator jackets and went for some shiny gold starred ones to celebrate their honorary star on the Walk of Fame yesterday afternoon before going on a shopping spree at (where else) Victoria's Secret. The girls — Heidi Klum, Karolina Kurkova, Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, Izabel Goulart, and Selita Ebanks — reveled in their blindingly pink and gold setting just days before taking to the catwalk in the newest and greatest underwear VS has to offer. If Angel veteran Heidi Klum is getting sick of going through the motions, you wouldn't know it by her excitement about posing with a loaf of bread. Literally. Victoria’s Secret Models Get a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

Nearly 30 Victoria’s Secret models, including Heidi Klum, Karolina Kurkova, Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, Izabel Goulart, Selita Ebanks, Marisa Miller and Miranda Kerr, posed next to their brand-new honorary star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Tuesday.

In case you didn’t know:

The Hollywood Walk of Fame is a sidewalk along Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, United States, which is embedded with more than 2,000 five-pointed stars featuring the names of not only human celebrities but fictional characters honored by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce for their contributions to the entertainment industry. The Walk of Fame is maintained by the self-financing Hollywood Historic Trust. The first star, awarded on February 9, 1960, went to Joanne Woodward.

Good angels go to heaven, Victoria`s Secret angels go everywhere.

Everyone is familiar with lovely angels who stroll down the catwalk, wearing seductive Victoria`s Secret lingerie. Extravagant fashion shows, most current world top models are some of this fashion home`s marketing moves.

“Good angels go to heaven, Victoria´s Secret angels go everywhere”. This is how Victoria`s Secret set out from New York to Los Angeles in order to do a fashion show at the Hollywood Kodaktheatre, this Thursday, which will feature a performance by the Spice Girls.

Angels as a marketing move

After Victoria`s Secret founder Roy Raymond sold the company to The Limited in 1982, it was turned into the largest billion dollar brand that manufatures romantic and sensual feminine lingerie. Victoria`s Secret put wings on its model in 1999, thus creating a group of the most current supermodels called Victoria`s Secret Angels, who are also spokespersons of the brand. They have annual multi-million dollar contracts: Adriana Lima, Selita Ebanks, Alessandra Ambrosio, Izabel Goulart, Karolina Kurkova and Heidi Klum.

- I wore wings with sequins, dangerous wings… This year they gave me little cute, angel wings – they are very comfortable. It is a bit difficult to walk, but we have to suffer for beauty, don`t you think so? I don`t mind suffering for wings as beautiful as these – Czech beauty Delish Karolina told Entertainment Tonight.

An A-List Kegger in Bev Hills

You know the opening scene from Legally Blonde that makes you wish you were in a sorority? That’s exactly what this white and hot-pink mansion looks like. Except instead of college students, the honorary chair is Victoria’s Secret Angel Miranda Kerr, and she’s invited Hollywood’s trendiest partygoers to her Beverly Hills sorority house. Welcome to Victoria's Secret's Phi Beta Pink Social.

When I enter the mansion (adorned with large Grecian columns), I’m handed a plastic cup. This will allow me access to the keg and the beer-pong table out back, where guests like model Lydia Hearst are already playing with hot-pink Ping-Pong balls. Of course, if I lose my cup I can always channel my E! cohort Ben Lyons and start funneling or doing keg-stands. But after all my frat parties in college, I think I’m over that scene.

I prefer to partake in the other activities available: roasting marshmallows in minibonfires, chowing down on burgers fresh off the grill, playing pool on a hot-pink table and personalizing hoodies—one of the night's most popular doings. I told you this wasn't your normal kegger—especially since many of the guests, like Danity Kane’s Aubrey O'Day and newly Afroed Rumer Willis, never made it through college.

“I never really got a college experience,” Lauren "L.C." Conrad tells me. “I’ve gone to frat parties with my guy friends, but nobody’s throwing up here, so it’s a lot better.” Audrina Patridge agrees, adding she loves the pink theme (what girl wouldn’t?). She lets slip that another Malibu beach party is coming up on the next episode of The Hills—and then takes off to get her drink on.

Meanwhile, David Hasselhoff stampedes through the party with actress Lori Kelly, frantically searches for a water bottle at the bar and then takes off in a whirlwind. The Hoff is sure in a hurry, but at least he’s drinking water! Much calmer is Matthew Perry. But apparently he isn't in the best of moods. I try to talk to one of the only college graduates at the party about how the scene compares to his Canadian academic years, but he’d rather stay low-key. “Can I say no?” he asks me, trying to avoid any questions. I reluctantly nod my head. “Then no.” F for Politeness 101!

Lacey Chabert is much happier to share her memories. “I learned about body glitter when I was 13,” she tells me as we check out Pink apparel in the garage out front. “I still love it!” She’s decided to cover up tonight, but the Mean Girls star still sparkles as she rummages through the sweats, tees and hoodies in the gifting lounge. But nobody shines brighter than model Alessandra Ambrosio, who steals fellow Angel Miranda’s spotlight the minute she flies inside in her belted, white shirt-dress to take pictures with Paris Hilton and other guests. If this were truly a sorority, I’d want her as my big sister.

Too bad this isn't a university reality. If schools had models and socialites that looked like this running around campus, every kid in America would probably be in college.

Victoria's Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio stopped traffic on Friday (12 October) -- literally. The leggy Brazilian was crossing Collins Avenue en route to Atrium boutique against the light when a fleet of cars filled with men slowed to stop, ultimately clearing a path for Ambrosio. Says one witness, ''I've never seen anything like it.'' Once inside the store, she bought two hats, an Emamo bikini and a pair of Rock & Republic shorts.

''I heard one guy bragging to a friend that she actually spoke to him.'' How nice!

From uppercuts to haircuts (The Big Career Switch: From boxer to hairstylist)
by Palma Kolansky

Patrick Melivlle is a former boxer who decided to become a hairstylist.

Who Pulled It Off: Patrick Melville, 49

What He Does: He owns the Patrick Melville Salon in Rockefeller Center. (www.patrickmelvillesalon.com).

What He Used To Do: Melville was a champion amateur boxer in his native England.

Why He Switched: "I grew up boxing in Manchester and won national titles. I knew I couldn't be a boxer forever, so I did a hairdressing apprenticeship and got licensed. I became a full-time stylist when I realized I wasn't going to be a world champion."

How He Did It: "I was still working with my hands, and I became as passionate about beauty as I'd been about boxing. I moved to London and started moving up in the salon world. Today, New York's creative energy brings out my best."

What A Salon Owner Does: "I'm very hands-on and spend a lot of time with each client. Some are models and celebs, some are fashionable New York women. I also work on photo shoots, commercials and runway shows. As the boss of my salon, I supervise 26 employees, budgeting, marketing and future expansion."

Who Does This Job Best? "Styling is more than technique. You must have an artistic gift, because hair is like a blank canvas. You need to really listen and observe to understand what makes a woman look and feel beautiful. Then you can customize your work for her. Stylists who own salons should be good managers and businesspeople."

How's The Dough? "A stylist who develops an avid following does very well. The more clients, the more money. It gets really good when you open a salon that takes off."

What About Perks? "I travel first class all over the world for jobs. I'm always meeting people, and the beauty industry is very sophisticated and exciting. I am never bored."

What Else You Should Know: "I got into hairdressing to meet girls, and now I style the Victoria's Secret Angels. Pretty good for a teenage boxer from Manchester."

How to be a Supermodel
by Kiri Blakeley

Imagine: One day, you're a gangly 14-year-old girl scarfing a Big Mac at McDonald's. The next, you are the highest-paid model in the world, stalking the runways of New York, Paris and Milan, Italy; yours is the face of everything from Dolce and Gabbana to Victoria's Secret to Apple computers; you're dating mega-hunks like actor Leonardo DiCaprio and quarterback Tom Brady. It happened to supermodel Gisele Bundchen.

Didn't it?

Yes and no. There were many, many steps in between burger and hunks. And even for the most beautiful, the most outgoing, perfect young woman, the odds are far better at the lottery counter. But still, every year, some women do make it. It isn't impossible. So how does a pretty teen girl go from nobody to supermodel?

A handful, like Kate Moss, take the express route. She was a 14-year-old in JFK Airport when she was first spied by an agent for London's Storm Model Management. Others, like Victoria's Secret angel Adriana Lima and Australian sensation Gemma Ward, accompanied a friend to a modeling contest, only to end up being the discovery.

"It's the girl who never thought she could who gets discovered. The prettiest girl in school doesn't always make the best model," says Ivan Bart, a top agent with IMG Models, which reps Bundchen, Heidi Klum and Kate Moss.

But for most others, the slog up the ladder follows a routine path. Girls send photos into a local or national modeling agency (only a Polaroid is needed) or show up for an open casting call. Agencies generally hold them once a week. Victoria's Secret's Alessandra Ambrosio took a modeling class in her hometown of Erechim, Brazil, then urged her mother to move with her to São Paolo, where she was scouted by a local agency. Soon she won a modeling contest sponsored by Elite, one of New York's biggest agencies.

Modeling conventions, where local agencies can introduce promising models to bigger agents, are another possibility. Model Amy Wesson, Maybelline face Jessica White and former male model Ashton Kutcher were discovered at the International Modeling and Talent Association convention, held twice a year in New York and Los Angeles.

Once a girl is signed with a big agency (in New York, where the biggest are located, this would include IMG, Elite, Next, Women and DNA), she is sent on what is called "go-sees"--castings for photographers, editorials and runway shows.

During Fashion Weeks in New York, Paris and Milan (held in spring and fall), a model can be sent on as many as a dozen go-sees a day for six weeks. It's this grueling and low-paying internship process that determines whether a model can burst out of the anonymous pack.

Getting cast in an important designer's show, like that of Marc Jacobs or Prada, can instantly launch a career. Not getting cast at all can mean a one-way ticket back home. Depending on her experience, a model is usually paid $250 to $1,200 an hour for runway work. But a beginner model takes home little or nothing. Everything from cabs to airfare to the agency's 10% fees (20% if the girl is still signed with a local agency) is deducted from her salary, and many designers don't pay at all.

"I have no idea how much I make," says newcomer Edythe Hughes, 17, a teen scouted in a Columbus, Ohio, mall two years ago. This season, she strutted the runways in New York for Vera Wang, Rebecca Taylor and Jill Stuart.

Hughes is advanced $150 a week for expenses and probably won't see much more than that. But she doesn't mind: "Before this, I was working as a librarian, making $8 an hour." Last season, Hughes worked as an "exclusive" model for Calvin Klein and banked $9,500 for one show (and 15 hours' prep time). Of that, she thinks she netted about $5,000, but she isn't sure. With luck, Hughes will get a better grip on her finances this year. She's hired an accountant.

Runway may not pay, but it can pay off. It's here that a model can be scouted by the star makers of the industry--editors, photographers, cosmetic company executives. It's here that front-row fixture Anna Wintour might take notice of a girl and put her in the pages of Vogue. The new face of Estée Lauder, Hilary Rhoda, was spotted at a New York fashion show by Balenciaga's lead designer, Nicolas Guesquiere, who then brought the unknown catwalker to the attention of his friend Aerin Lauder, Estée's granddaughter and the company's creative director.

Rhoda, a 20-year-old from Chevy Chase, Md., joins a long line of faces who became ubiquitous on billboards, commercials and beauty counters the world over, thanks to the cosmetic giant. Karen Graham was its first contract model, and she lasted 15 years (this before retouching). In the 1990s, the brand made Paulina Porizkova one of the most famous faces on the planet. It also launched the modeling career of Elizabeth Hurley, who, at the time, was known primarily for being Hugh Grant's girlfriend. Next came supermodels Carolyn Murphy and Liya Kibede (who is being phased out this year).

Contract models for larger cosmetic brands are generally paid $300,000 to $2 million a year, depending on exclusivity and the amount of days the model is expected to work. Murphy, who models for other brands, earned an estimated $5 million last year. Rhoda raked in $2 million.

Estée Lauder's models are chosen by its top four executives, including Aerin Lauder. Candidates are brought in for a photo shoot and put in mock-up ads. They interview with the executives, who want to make sure the girls are well spoken and can handle store and media appearances. Group President John Dempsey claims that, when it comes to making a final decision, there's never dissension in the ranks: "Everybody's eyes go to one girl."

Rhoda, says Dempsey, was chosen for her healthy all-American look and her maturity: "She has the presence of someone five or six years older." The models are required to be a "positive role model" and have a "morals clause" in their contracts. No wonder the brand tends to eschew Hollywood starlets. The face of its new fragrance, Private Collection, is 37-year-old Aerin Lauder herself.

At Victoria's Secret, which has made superstars out of dozens of models, including Gisele Bundchen, Adriana Lima, Heidi Klum, Tyra Banks and Alessandra Ambrosio, executives don't have to rely on personal preference to pick their next faces. They can measure a girl's potential in cold hard cash.

"Some girls sell incredibly well," says Chief Marketing Officer Edward Razek. Computers track each photograph in every catalog. Not surprisingly, girls who move merchandise end up moving up the corporate ladder to supermodeldom.

As for girls like Edythe Hughes, only time will tell if she'll end up a supermodel or back in Ohio. Keeping her hopes high, but not too high, she says her goal would be to work with a photographer like Steven Meisel or become a popular editorial model like Gemma Ward. "There's not too many Tyra's anymore," she says.

Remembrance of Thongs Past:
Victoria's Secret packages instantly recognizable sex appeal.
by Leslie Bennetts

Their arms draped over one another's writhing bodies, the supermodels shimmy and shift in time with the music, moving as one despite a dozen impossibly attenuated legs. Except for stiletto heels, long black gloves, and several million dollars' worth of diamonds, all six women are entirely naked.

Although none of the models are wearing a Victoria's Secret product, the resulting photographs are instantly recognizable. Other companies may simply peddle lingerie, but Victoria's Secret has long since mastered the art of merchandising a certain kind of sex appeal that is more identifiable than any underwear. "We are selling sexy, sensual, sophisticated, and forever young," says Sharen Jester Turney, the C.E.O. of Victoria's Secret, whose sales topped $5 billion in 2006.

This year climaxes with the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, an annual extravaganza starring the sleek bodies of Heidi Klum and Karolina Kurkova. Televised by CBS on December 4, the show will again feature such traditions as a million-dollar bra (last year's was all diamonds) and the grand finale's infamous Angel wings, which have been made of everything from feathers to gold lamé (this year's design is a secret).

Even more noteworthy than its success is the fact that Victoria's Secret has racked up all those sales in the U.S. alone, where it has more than a thousand stores and 6.7 million catalogue customers. But with competition increasing and profit margins deflating, the company is now poised to expand abroad, beginning with a test of its beauty products in La Senza's international stores, a recent acquisition by Limited Brands, Victoria's Secret's parent company.

More potent than any armed invaders, the supermodels will take on the global economy, inspiring consumer demand for bras and thongs as surely as they embody other kinds of desire. "It's not a matter of 'if,'" says Jester Turney. "It's a matter of 'when.'"

The bra turns 100 years old - with no signs of sagging

A hundred years after the term 'brassiere' was coined, women like Victoria's Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio are keeping it sexy.

The 100th birthday of the bra has arrived.

Though women (and a few good men) have been wrapping up their ta-tas since ancient Greece, it wasn't until 1907 that Vogue magazine first used the word brassiere.

In the 100 years that followed, the bra has been through hills and valleys. Here's our time line of the development of the lingerie we love.

1907 The term "brassiere," from a French word used to denote a soldier's arm guard or shield, is used to describe the undergarmet in Vogue magazine.

1911 The word enters the Oxford English Dictionary.

1914 The first brassiere patent is awarded to New York socialite Mary Phelps Jacob. She quickly loses interest and sells the patent to the Warner Brothers Corset Company in Bridgeport, Conn., for $1,500. In the years that follow, Warner will pull in around $15 million.

1925 Maidenform, founded by Russian immigrant Ida Rosenthal and dressmaker pal Enid Bisset, opens its first plant in Bayonne, N.J. Rosenthal is often credited with having invented cup sizes - though some attribute that bright idea to her husband, William.

1937 Lana Turner's form-fitting attire in "They Won't Forget" reveals that bra technology has increased lift and pointy, separate positioning - and earns her the nickname the "Sweater Girl." "This change came about at a time when no one was wearing such tight clothes," says Rebecca Apsan, owner of New York lingerie shop La Petite Coquette and author of "The Lingerie Handbook." "Naturally, she appealed to men."

1946 The first ever bikini hits the Paris catwalk, designed by French engineer Louis Réard and fashion designer Jacques Heim. Some say they named the suit after the Bikini atoll, a nuclear weapons test site in the Marshall Islands, thinking that it would cause quite an explosion. They were right.

1965 Controversial designer Rudi Gernreich - inventor of 1964's "topless bathing suit" - turns his attention to the bra. He comes up with the "no bra" bra, made of see-through stretch netting. It is a retail hit, playing to the flat, boyish silhouette of the 1960s. Pointy is out!

1968 A protest of the 1968 Miss America Pageant gives rise to the legend of feminist bra burning. Though women at the Atlantic City protest filled a "freedom trash can" with bras, girdles, high heels, makeup and hairspray, it was not set alight because no fire permit could be obtained. Misworded reports - such as one from hapless New York Post journalist Lindsay van Gelder - spread like the fire that might have been.

1970 Feminist author Germaine Greer becomes a household name with her best seller "The Female Eunuch." According to Greer, "Bras are a ludicrous invention, but if you make bralessness a rule, you're just subjecting yourself to yet another repression." Despite the clarifying second half of her statement, Greer is linked to the myth of bra-burning as a symbol of radical feminism.

1977 Lisa Lindahl, a 28-year-old grad student at the University of Vermont, sews an athletic bra out of two jock straps and takes it for a test jog with fit friend Hinda Miller. The sports bra is born.

1977 Victoria's Secret is founded in San Francisco after Stanford MBA Roy Raymond realizes men might be more comfortable shopping for their girlfriends via catalogue.

1990 Jean Paul Gaultier designs a golden, pointy cone bra for Madonna to wear on her Blond Ambition concert tour. "The design itself is brilliant," says Apsan, "but Madonna made it famous. She took shapewear out of the bedroom and onto the streets of America."

1991 Wonderbra, though first trademarked in 1935, is reintroduced to a huge resurgence. By 1994, the bra's "Hello Boys" ad campaign featuring Eva Herzigova gazing down at her bosom, gives the line a huge profile.

2004 During a now infamous half-time Super Bowl performance with Justin Timberlake, Janet Jackson experiences a "wardrobe malfunction" and reveals that she is not wearing a bra. She does, however, show 100 million Americans the bra's distant cousin, the nipple shield.

2007 In the moments before her disastrous "comeback" performance at the MTV Video Music Awards, Britney Spears reportedly ditches her costume for a black, sparkly bra and panty set. We're quite sure this is one brassiere you won't be seeing in Vogue.

Meet the World's Luckiest Plane

Models Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, Karolina Kurkova, Miranda Kerr, Selita Ebanks and Izabel Goulart make a symbolic gesture to celebrate Victoria's Secret's alliance with Virgin America.

In a match made in heaven (at least a heaven where gorgeous angels wear revealing lingerie), Victoria's Secret has announced that Virgin America will be the official "Airline of the Angels," for the 2007 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.

So what exactly does this mean to you, the average flyer? Nothing. But for a select few (who will hopefully bring many, many cameras), Virgin and Victoria will be hosting the first-ever supermodel in-flight pajama party this November.

After touching down in Los Angeles on Nov. 12, the Victoria's Secret Angels will name their own Virgin America plane and officially kick off this year's Victoria's Secret Fashion Show with a press conference on the tarmac at Los Angeles International Airport. The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show will tape at the Kodak Theater on Nov. 15 and will be broadcast Tuesday, Dec. 4 (10:00 PM ET/PT), on the CBS television network.

As the official "Airline of the Angels," Virgin America and Victoria's Secret will also host the first ever in-flight supermodel PJ party on a Virgin America flight from New York to Los Angeles this November. Lucky guests will get to fly in style with the Victoria's Secret supermodels and check out the latest VS PJ fashions at 35,000 feet. The in-flight PJ party will be one of three exclusive PJ parties hosted by Victoria's Secret this holiday season.

"We are very excited about our partnership with Virgin America for this year's Victoria's Secret Fashion Show," said Victoria's Secret spokesperson Monica Mitro. "What better way to kick off the sexiest show on Earth than with the sexiest flight on Earth?"

Film Crew Turn Edinburgh Into Winter Wonderland For Latest Installment Of Supermodel Alessandra's Tv Advert

Edinburgh's famous Royal Mile was turned into a Christmas wonderland yesterday.

But winter hadn't arrived early - the snow and festive lights made up the set of fashion chain Next's new TV advert.

Brazilian model Alessandra Ambrosio and Jennifer Aniston's recent squeeze, Paul Sculfor, were filming a movie-style commercial to be shown in December.

It features the couple cavorting through a snowy Edinburgh dressed in a selection of Next party outfits. Filming took place on the cobbles of the Royal Mile outside renowned restaurant The Witchery.

The mini-film features fated lovers Ale and Paul, played by the glamorous pair.

The first installment of the ad sees them meet in London.

The follow-up, being filmed yesterday, tells the story of their first date in Edinburgh at Christmas time - so, naturally, some fake snow and fairy lights were required.

Alessandra is the face of Next and is becoming something of a star on British high streets.

The 26-year-old made her name as a model for lingerie company Victoria's Secret.

Paul, a 36-year-old former builder from Essex, hit the headlines recently for dating Brad Pitt's ex-wife.

A Next spokesman said the pair's chemistry was similar to that of the couple in the Gold Blend adverts.

He said: "Not since the romance between coffee-drinking Sharon and Tony blossomed on to the small screen in a Gold Blend coffee advert has the art of turning a TV commercial into a mini-movie worked so well."

He promised this was an advert with "high production values and a film quality that is more than a simple ad campaign".

He added: "It's a story - a movie cut up into 60 and 30-second pieces that will entertain as well as convey the brand message." Alessandra's character, Ale, is a party planner who keeps catching the eye of a mystery hunk, played by Paul, at a bash in London.

That "will they, won't they" section of the advert was filmed in England in July.

Yesterday saw them film the conclusion to it in Scotland.

The spokesman said: "In the best soap opera tradition, the first episode, set in London, ends with a 'what happens next' cliffhanger scenario.

"We don't want to give too much away - Next's next installment will follow Ale north of the Border for a festive first date."

He added: "Ale is a character that embodies the spirit of Next with whom customers can relate to and identify with.

Alessandra, who is also the face of Armani, has been described by retired supermodel Tyra Banks as "the future of the modelling world".

However, she is also involved in charity work, being an ambassador for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Snow falls on Royal Mile as advert filmed

Fake snow and a Christmas tree decorated the outside of a Royal Mile pub today as TV cameras rolled for the filming of a new UK-wide Next advert. Actors breezed in and out the Whiski bar as they showed off the clothing store's winter party dresses. The commercial will be the second in a series that depicts a blossoming romance between Ale, played by South American supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio, and Paul Sculfor, the real-life boyfriend of Jennifer Aniston. They have been filming in the Capital all week, with the couple pictured laughing and joking while walking along the cobbled streets of the Royal Mile. It follows the airing on Friday of the first installment of the series, during which the couple met in London. The Edinburgh Christmas scenes show them on their first proper date together. It's hoped their chemistry will remind people of the Gold Blend coffee adverts. A spokesman said: "It's a story, cut up into two pieces that will entertain as well as convey the brand image."

Star proves a model shopper

WHAT'S a supermodel to do if she arrives in Edinburgh but her luggage doesn't? If you're Alessandra Ambrosio, the face (etc) of Victoria's Secret and star of Next's new TV ads, you get someone to speak nicely to Harvey Nichols' personal shopping manager and get the store open after hours. Stunned security guards stood aside as the Brazilian babe dashed in on Monday with Jennifer Aniston's on-off squeeze, Paul Sculfor, and grabbed all the Chloe and Stella McCartney a girl could carry.

Jen's Ex Finds Love in TV Ad

Jennifer Aniston might want to look away now.

Because we have exclusive video footage of her ex, Brit model Paul Sculfor, cosying up to Victoria's Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio.

Luckily for Jen it's for a Next TV advert, the first the company has ever commissioned, which airs for the first time tonight on ITV1.

The high street chain chose the sickeningly gorgeous pair to star in it's first ever TV advert to celebrate it's 25th birthday.

The ad is the start of a Gold Blend style love story following the couple's romance and the entire cast are decked out in Next's best togs.

Alessandra had over 12 costume changes for the 60 second film.

And we hate to say it but she looks gorgeous in each and every one of them.

A First TV Ad ... whatever Next?

The launch of a new M&S telly advert, whether it's Myleene modelling a sexy bikini, Shirley Bassey falling out of a tight frock or a food porn number, has the nation in great anticipation.

Now Next has decided to create its own mini Hollywood movie with its first ever telly advert. Starring sexy Alessandra Ambrosio and Paul Sculfor - the Essex model who's recently had a close encounter with Jennifer Anniston - it is reminiscent of those mega successful Nescafé adverts of the 1980s starring Sharon and Tony as the will they, won't they duo.

It has its very first airing tonight at 7.15pm, in the Emmerdale break, so tune in to see what all the fuss is about - and have a good look at the company's new season clothes.

Next, I remember, was very exciting when it hit the high street 25 years ago. As a teenager, I loved all those 80s clothes - the leggings, the wrap coats, the puff ball skirts, the shoulder pads - and Next had them all.

And throughout my career, Next has always been there, picking up designer trends, making them accessible to all and simply keeping the clothes coming.

Even now, when organizing a fashion shoot, I know I can always pop into Next to pick up a few great pieces that will add a little something to a picture.

People like the easy, unfussy styles that you can simply put on and forget about - and the company hasn't really budged from this philosophy.

What they get right is that young fashion types like the vaguely grown- up feel, while us more mature shoppers don't feel like mutton dressed as lamb, so everyone is smiling. Take a trip into the main Norwich store and you really will see all ages, shapes and sizes - the maternity collection looks very good this year - flitting around.

The Directory was just as exciting - the first really decent, stylish book, with page after page of attractive people in modern clothes! Quite revolutionary back in 1988 when catalogue shopping was a fusty world. It meant, obviously, that even if you lived up a mountain in Wales, you could get your hands on well priced and highly wearable clothes in just 48 hours.

Next performs consistently well because it doesn't challenge or push any boundaries. I've always thought that it does that American casual look very well - there are countless variations on the trousers and top look and they seem to do just about all of them. You don't have to try too hard with their collections as everything mixes and matches together quite happily. Many of the pieces are very yummy mummy in concept. And their work wear is another blessing. Again, not too challenging, but reasonably priced and fairly classic so you can get a good couple of seasons out of them!

People drool over the children's clothes which just about hit the right note - vaguely fashionable without being too grown-up, or, at worse, tarty for little girls.

And then, of course, came Next interiors so you could really surround yourself with the whole easy living concept. Some critics don't like this identikit way of living. That not only will people wear the same clothes but exist with the same furniture, kitchen accessories and more.

They have been very good at getting across their own brand, with plenty of logos on many of their pieces, and people do enjoy buying into the whole lifestyle thing. And that is perhaps where their success really lies. They are good at self- promotion - the logo-loving 80s gave way to solid green credentials in the caring sharing 90s and now the company realize the importance of snazzy telly commercials.

Next airs first national TV ad

Next, the high street retailer, is airing its first national television advertising this week. The ad is the first in a series that follows the growing relationship between a party organiser and her client and is intended to have the same impact as the iconic Gold Blend ads featuring Sharon and Tony.

The ad is entitled Ale's Party and features South American supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio (pictured) as a young women starting a career in media and organising an event for her client Paul Sculfor, the male model.

The first execution will air during Friday's Emmerdale ad break on ITV and be followed up with a Christmas ad after their first date in Edinburgh.

The ad has been created in-house with media planning and buying by Mediaedge:cia. Chief executive Simon Wolfson came up with the concept after watching the film The Devil Wears Prada.

The ads show Ale going through a range of outfits throughout the day including outdoor wear, home wear and evening wear as she sets up the party, to the KT Tunstall track "Suddenly I see". The ad also features 100 extras, all employed by the home shopping and high street retailer.

Victoria's Secret back on CBS

The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show is returning to prime time this winter, albeit the outer limits of prime time.

CBS will be bringing sexy back Dec. 4 at 10 p.m., late enough, execs are hoping, to placate those concerned viewers out there who worry that all that low-cut lace is a little much for those whose bedtimes fall in the 8-10 p.m. range.

Heidi Klum, Adriana Lima, Karolina Kurkova and Selita Ebanks will be among the professional lovelies taking part in the nearly annual event, which was temporarily replaced by the Angels Across America tour in 2004. The lingerie showcase was booted from the airwaves in 2004 in the wake of Janet Jackson's nipple slip and then again the following year, to avoid antagonizing the FCC.

Ebanks and Kurkova joined Victoria's Secret president and CEO Sharen Tuney Monday at the New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street to ring the bell that opens the day's trading and announce the plans for this year's program.

Notably missing from the catwalk this year will be Giselle Bündchen, who parted ways with Victoria's Secret in May after being a frequent catalogue fixture for several years. While neither party gave a particular reason, the breakup reportedly occurred after the upscale undies purveyor refused to raise the leggy Brazilian's $5 million annual salary.

Justin Timberlake headlined last year's special, which returned to CBS after its aforementioned two-year absence, but there's no word yet on what sort of musical accompaniment is in the works for 2007.

Victoria's Secret Chief Expects Athletic Wear to Be Growth Area
10 August, 2007
Source: Wall Street Journal

Though the supermodels in its commercials don't seem to do anything more strenuous than sitting around and looking glamorous, the chief executive of the Victoria's Secret brand said yoga pants, sports bras and other athletic clothes could soon become a major portion of the lingerie retailer's business.

Victoria's Secret is putting athletic wear in 30 of its stores this fall to test the potential of sports gear, said Sharen Jester Turney, president and chief executive of the chain, a $5 billion division of Limited Brands Inc., based in Columbus, Ohio. In two weeks, the retailer also will open a free-standing store in Columbus to sell athletic clothes.

Early customer response to the gear has been "extremely positive," Ms. Turney said. "Many of our customers have said, 'I've been waiting for you to do sport wear that is sexier'" than other athletic brands, which tend to look less feminine, she said.

In a phone interview from New York, where Ms. Turney rang the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Limited's listing, the CEO said athletic wear eventually could produce as many sales as Victoria's Secret's Pink brand, a line of lingerie and sleepwear aimed at college students and young adults. Pink is expected to post about $900 million in sales this year.

Now that Limited has disposed of its apparel chains, Express and Limited Stores, the retailer can pour resources into its two remaining large brands, Victoria's Secret and Bath & Body Works, Ms. Turney said. Victoria's Secret has embarked on a major expansion plan that will nearly double the size of its average store; more than 80% of its locations will be remodeled over the next five years. For the holidays, Victoria's Secret is adding accessories, such as cosmetics bags, luggage and handbags, which it hopes shoppers will buy as gifts.

Victoria's Secret also plans to grow internationally, with the help of Canadian lingerie retailer La Senza, which Limited now owns. La Senza has stores in roughly three dozen countries, operating under franchise agreements outside Canada. The CEO said it's too soon to say where Victoria's Secret will expand abroad, but the brand's beauty products will be stocked in some of La Senza's Canadian stores this fall, as a test.

But Victoria's Secret is pushing for growth at a time when shoppers are pulling back. Yesterday, Limited said its July same-store sales, or sales at stores open at least a year, declined 3% for the entire company and 4% at Victoria's Secret.

Ms. Turney said consumer confidence is weak, given "the economic situation right now, gas prices, the war in Iraq, the mortgage situation." She said Victoria's Secret has planned "very conservatively" for the fall, keeping its inventory down and focusing its marketing on a few key areas. In addition, she said, the brand has fixed mistakes from the spring season, when some of its new products and marketing confused customers, who weren't always sure what made the new bras different from older models.

She added that she is watching competitors such as J.C. Penney Co. and Abercrombie & Fitch Co., which are making a greater push into the lingerie business. "People are definitely ramping up, but competition is not something new to Victoria's Secret," Ms. Turney said. "The best defense against competition is to stay focused and be assertive about what we do best."

Bundchen struts to the top of Forbes' richest models list
19 July, 2007
Source: USA Today

Gisele Bundchen tops Forbes.com's list of the world's richest models, earning $33 million in the last 12 months.

The Brazilian supermodel strutted past the likes of Kate Moss, who came in at No.2, and Heidi Klum, who placed third on the list.

Bundchen, 26, parted ways with Victoria's Secret in May and will see her lucrative contract with the lingerie brand expire at the end of the year.

Still, she boasts "more contracts than any other model on the planet," Forbes.com said, and has appeared in campaigns for high-end brands including Apple, Dolce & Gabbana and Roberto Cavalli.

Moss, who recently launched a clothing line at British fashion retailer Topshop, ranks second with $9 million. The 33-year-old fashion icon is the new face of fashion label Stella McCartney and Italian sportswear company Belstaff.

Klum, 34, placed third with $8 million. She is a Victoria's Secret spokesmodel and host of Bravo's Project Runway.

Two more Victoria's Secret beauties — Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio — rounded out the top five with $6 million each.

They were followed by Carolyn Murphy ($5 million); Natalia Vodianova ($4.5 million); Karolina Kurkova and Daria Werbowy (both $3.5 million); Gemma Ward ($3 million); Liya Kebede ($2.5 million); Hilary Rhoda and Shalom Harlow (both $2 million); and Doutzen Kroes and Jessica Stam (both $1.5 million).

In ranking these catwalkers, Forbes.com said editors also factored in a model's "relevancy" — determined by recent campaigns, fashion magazine covers and opinions of those in the fashion industry — where necessary. The list was posted Monday on the website.

Gisele Bundchen: The World's Richest Supermodel

Topping Forbes magazine's list of the top 15 richest supermodels is none other than the Brazilian-born Gisele Bundchen. According to the magazine, Gisele takes home $33 million per year, which puts her at a higher salary than the Yankee's Alex Rodriguez (he has a 10 year, $250 million contract). All of the models on Forbes list take in $1.5 million or more.

Coming up second on the list is British-born Kate Moss, who earns $9 million a year from her various contracts. In the third, fourth, and fifth places on the list are Victoria's Secret models Heidi Klum, Adriana Lima, and Alessandra Ambrosio, who each earn between $6 to $8 million per year.

While runway shows get models some exposure, they don't really help them bring in big money. The pay is not that great, at around $250 an hour. The big money is earned by scoring large ad campaigns and contracts, and that is how most of the ladies on this list have made their millions.

Gisele Bundchen stars in almost 20 campaigns a year, licenses her name to a Brazilian shoe company, and was the lead model for Victoria's Secret, who pays her $5 million a year.

Gisele Bundchen not only has Tom Brady as a boyfriend, she’s got money in the bank. The former Victoria’s Secret model from Brazil, 26, has topped the Forbes.com list of the world’s richest models, the Associated Press reports.

The world’s top earning models
16 July, 2007
Source: MSNBC

In 1990, supermodel Linda Evangelista uttered what has become the most famous quote in modeling history: "We don't wake up for less than $10,000 a day."

She was referring to herself and fellow supermodel Christy Turlington, both of whom were a core part of the handful of models shaking up the industry by being as famous and powerful as celebrities.

Models did talk shows. They landed movie roles. They inspired franchises (the ill-fated "Fashion Café," which was part-owned by supermodels Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell and Elle MacPherson). They dated or married movie stars (Linda Evangelista and Kyle MacLachlan; Christy Turlington and Ed Burns; Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere). And, of course, they made millions.

Some still do. Gisele Bundchen tops Forbes.com's 2007 list of The Top Earning Models in the World, raking in $33 million, more than triple the $9 million banked by Kate Moss, who came in second. The 15 models on our list were ranked primarily according to estimated earnings over the past 12 months.

Where necessary, the "relevancy" of the model — determined by recent campaigns, editorials, fashion magazine covers and the opinion of those in the industry — were taken into account. Household names Heidi Klum ($8 million), Adriana Lima ($6 million) and Alessandra Ambrosio ($6 million) round out the top five slots.

In Pictures: Inside A Victoria's Secret Shoot With Alessandra Ambrosio
16 July, 2007
Source: forbes.com

Alessandra Ambrosio, 26, is part of the trinity of Brazilian beauties in contract with Victoria's Secret--rounded out by former roommate Gisele Bundchen and Adriana Lima. She also models for Armani Exchange and Next U.K. She invited Forbes to join her for a typical workday.

Ambrosio starts her day at 9 a.m. with a latte at the bar of Pier 59 in Chelsea Piers in New York City, where she will be modeling clothes for the Victoria's Secret catalogue.

Even 26-year-old world-famous models need some help: Ambrosio begins the 2-hour hair and makeup process.

Hair extensions in place, Ambrosio checks the messages on her Web site, alessandraambrosio.com, which gets 250,000 hits a month. "Ale," as she's known to her friends, likes to personally answer her fans, many of whom are young aspiring models. Ambrosio started her career at 15. By 23, she had a multi-year, multimillion dollar Victoria's Secret contract: "It's what every model wants."

Ambrosio poses on set. It takes a crew of about 15 to make everything work: photographer, stylist, hair person, makeup person, stagehand, etc.

The cute girl from Brazil is now a supermodel.

A small crowd gathers to ogle as she arrives at The Beauty Candy Store, a private candy shop the lingerie giant uses to introduce new beauty products, for a press event.

Inside, Ambrosio promotes a new Victoria's Secret perfume, this one branded with her image.

Models have to be more than a pretty face--they have to be able to speak well in front of a TV crew. Asked by the reporter to give a beauty tip for summer, Ambrosio grabbed some bronzing lotion and spontaneously rattled off its ingredients.

Kate Moss is world's second richest model

An annual income of £4.4 million ($9 million) may seem like a large paycheck, but it was only enough to earn Kate Moss second place among the world's highest-paid supermodels in a table compiled by Forbes.

Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen. earned four times a much - £16.2 million - in the last 12 months, leaving her Croydon-born competitor trailing in her wake.

Forbes used estimated earnings in 2006, as well as recent campaigns, press coverage and the opinion of industry experts to compile the list of the 15 highest-paid female catwalk stars.

Between them, they took home more than £44 million ($91 million) in the last year.

In 2005 Moss was photographed allegedly snorting lines of cocaine at a recording studio, and a string of lucrative contracts were cancelled.

Despite this and recent fears that her wild lifestyle with her on-off boyfriend Pete Doherty were taking their toll on her looks, the 33-year-old has made a successful comeback.

As well as launching a range of clothes at Topshop, she has won new contracts with the designer Stella McCartney and the Italian sportswear company Belstaff.

But her earnings were dwarfed by those of the Brazilian supermodel Gisele.

The 26-year-old ex-girlfriend of the actor Leonardo DiCaprio appears in adverts for Apple, Dolce & Gabbana and Roberto Cavalli. She also has a line of sandals, Ipanema by Gisele.

Gisele, who has a non-identical twin sister, was reportedly discovered by a modelling agent as she ate a Big Mac with friends in McDonalds.

Heidi Klum, who is married to the singer Seal, was just behind Moss in at number three spot in Forbes' table.

The 34-year-old mother of three models Victoria’s Secret lingerie and hosts the hit reality television programme Project Runway on Bravo. In her spare time, she designs and markets a line of jewellery through Mouawad.

Completing the top five are two other Brazilians, Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio, who each amassed £3 million ($6 million) last year.

The World's Top-Earning Models

Where necessary, the "relevancy" of the model--determined by recent campaigns, editorials, fashion magazine covers and the opinion of those in the industry-- were taken into account. Household names Heidi Klum ($8 million), Adriana Lima ($6 million) and Alessandra Ambrosio ($6 million) round out the top five slots.

Gisele Bundchen is a workhorse who leads the pack by far: While most models on the list have one major contract in addition to three or four seasonal campaigns, Bundchen juggles almost 20 campaigns. She also brings in at least $6 million a year by licensing her name to a Brazilian shoe company, Grendene. But watch for Bundchen's fortunes to possibly decline next year: In December, her record-breaking $5 million a year deal with Victoria's Secret expires.

For most other models, things are different. Top models like those on our list still bank millions, but only once a multiyear contract is secured. The days of $10,000 runway fees are over. Top models don't even do runway. It's considered an internship process for the hundreds of anonymous 15- and 16-year-old foreign girls who swarm the runways of New York, Paris and Milan each season. They do 70 shows in six weeks and are paid about $250 an hour their first season.

A good hardworking model can make $200,000 a season. But chances are that model, once the season is over, will never be seen or heard from again.

In the supermodel heyday, most of the top models were homegrown--Cindy Crawford from Illinois, Tyra Banks and Christy Turlington from California. Their American accents made for a fairly easy transition to stardom. Then the fashion industry, which thrives on change, began to prefer foreigners.

Five years ago, it was the Brazilians, out of which rose Bundchen, Lima and Ambrosio. This new trinity, with their Victoria's Secret contracts, became well known, but with their foreign accents, they were unable to cross over into the world of TV, movies and talk shows as easily as their predecessors did. And with the exception of Bundchen, who dated Leonardo DiCaprio on and off for several years, they kept their private lives private.

A few seasons later came the Eastern Europeans: anonymous, pale, barely into their teens and bordering on anorexic. They were too young to become movie stars or date celebrities; too skeletal to bag Victoria's Secret contracts; and a lack of English didn't bode well for a broad media career.

Natalia Vodianova of Russia, who worked at a fruit stand from the time she was 11, rose out of this pack and into the protective arms of Calvin Klein. The vast majority were sent back to where they came from. Vodianova may be a star in the industry, but try to find a teenager in a Midwestern mall who would line up to get a glimpse of her the way she would have ten years ago for Tyra Banks or Cindy Crawford.

Meanwhile, the rise of celebrity culture relegated many models to anonymity. Cosmetic companies almost exclusively sign celebrities for their campaigns, as do designers. Scarlett Johansson is the face of Louis Vuitton; Eva Longoria represents L'Oreal; Jessica Alba pouts for Revlon; the list goes on and on.

Even more devastating to the industry's ability to create supermodels was that the fashion magazines followed suit. A decade ago, models graced 10 of the 12 covers of American Vogue. Last year, only one model made the cover, and that was Linda Evangelista--she of the famous $10,000-a-day quote--as if Vogue had a hankering for the time when models proudly proclaimed their celebrity status.

But it wasn't just celebrities knocking models out of the limelight. The designers--Marc Jacobs, Tommy Hilfiger, Miuccia Prada--became more famous than their mannequins. Isaac Mizrahi hosted the Golden Globe pre-show for the E! network. Donatella Versace is regularly skewered on Saturday Night Live. A decade ago, a top model might have made $100,000 on a single print campaign for a designer. Now, she will more likely get a small stipend fee, some free clothes, and the honor of an "association" with the famous designer.

But if opportunities for superstardom were waning in the modeling world, the ones who did make it could stay there longer than ever thanks to the advent of retouching. "It's completely stopped the aging process," says Elite agent Richard Habberley, who represents Victoria's Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio (who, at 26, need not worry about that just yet).

Eighties ubermodel Christie Brinkley, at 52, reclaimed her Cover Girl contract and appears none the worse for 20 years having passed. Christy Turlington, 38, and Linda Evangelista, 42, are also bagging new contracts, and look in advertisements almost exactly as they did back in their supermodel glory.

Ivan Bart, a top agent at IMG Models, which represents Gisele Bundchen and Heidi Klum, among others, adds that revenue streams are more plentiful these days: "There are new markets like Asia and China. The world is more global than ever." In March, IMG started a traveling Fashion Week, bringing the runway and top models like Gemma Ward and Naomi Campbell to towns like San Francisco and Houston.

But the fashion world is about nothing if not trends. And trends are cyclical. Already the editorials of Vogue are turning away from the scary skinny models of Eastern Europe towards a healthier-looking and more Americanized standard. Hilary Rhoda is probably the best example of this.

The new face of Estée Lauder grew up in Chevy Chase, Maryland, and played lacrosse and field hockey in high school. Unlike the size zero waifs that have taken over the runway, Rhoda wears a size four or six.

Cosmetics companies could start launching new faces again. In L'Oreal's latest ad campaign, Dutch model Doutzen Kroes is prominently featured next to Eva Longoria.

Models might even be making a comeback as cover girls. Vogue's May issue showcased 10 of the hottest new faces, including three models on our list: Hilary Rhoda, Doutzen Kroes and Jessica Stam. Natalia Vodianova had the July cover to herself. "It was time for Vogue to do a model again," says Patrick O'Connell, a rep for Vogue editor Anna Wintour. "Models are important."

One consistency throughout the past decade has been Victoria's Secret's modeling machine. The $5 billion lingerie giant (part of publicly traded Limited Brands (nyse: LTD) has launched the careers of dozens of supermodels over the years, including Gisele Bundchen and Heidi Klum and newer bikini babes Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio and Karolina Kurkova.

It has also steadfastly refused to follow the celebrity trend. "Most celebrities are about five foot two inches," says Edward Razek, the company's chief marketing officer, explaining why he turns down at least one celebrity a month begging to model the brand.

Victoria's Secret takes a similar role in nourishing talent to stardom in the way that Hollywood studios did with actresses back in the 1930s and '40s. A model starts out doing some runway, then advances to catalog, and, provided her professionalism and personality impresses enough people, she might eventually end up with the Academy Award of modeling gigs--a multiyear, multimillion dollar contract as a Victoria's Secret "angel." The company invests time and money into making their angels celebrities--the girls are given speech lessons and media training and booked on talk shows.

If the girls are lucky, they break into supermodel stardom and then, like Victoria's Secret alums Heidi Klum and Tyra Banks, become media moguls. This season, Victoria's Secret even began branding their beauty products with the girls' names and likenesses. "We don't subscribe to that nameless, faceless model routine," says Razek.

Top Spots To See A Model
by Lauren Sherman
11 July, 2007
Source: Forbes

What's the tip-off that you've stumbled into a supermodel bar--apart, that is, from the presence of gorgeous women? Could be the pomegranate martinis.

"Models love everything that is low-calorie, or has some sort of beauty benefit," explains Noah Tepperberg, co-founder and partner of the Strategic Group, which runs hot spots like Marquee in New York City and Dune in Southampton, N.Y. "Right now, they're drinking a lot of pomegranate juice because of the health benefits."

Kiss heroin-chic goodbye. In model-magnet cities like New York and Paris, the new generation of supes, like Gemma Ward, Adriana Lima and Darla Baker, are still spending nights out at the hippest clubs, restaurants and bars--but they're trying to reconcile their cocktailing with maintaining a "healthy lifestyle."

In Pictures: Best Model-Scouting Spots

Another tip-off: Décor. In New York City, Runway, which opened in April, boasts an illuminated catwalk reminiscent of those found in Fashion Week's tents. Grab a seat on one of the banquettes lining the runway and see if you can match some of the faces in the crowd to their head shots on the wall.

Of course, models do not live on booze alone. They must shop. Certain boutiques are known to be model-magnates. In Manhattan's West Village, for example, you'd do well to visit Butik, owned by supermodel Helena Christensen. It stocks everything from an eponymous line of clothing to antique treasures and Parisian chocolates, among other attractants.

In Paris, during Fashion Week and all year round, models shop in the neighborhood of Le Marais, scouring the racks at Azzedina Alaia, taking a breather at Murano Urban Resort for a cocktail (the bar stocks more than 130 kinds of vodka) or warming their tiny wan hands at the lobby's "endless" fireplace.

Just a Eurostar-ride away in London, old-timers like Kate Moss spend their nights at the Cuckoo Club. The resident DJs spin rock classics from The Rolling Stones to The Stone Roses. The V.I.P room upstairs--decked out in sumptuous purple fabric-lined mahogany banquettes--hosts many of London's Fashion Week after-parties.

Nobu London, like other Nobus around the globe, draws fashion gliteratti, including Nadja Auermann and the ageless, if leathery, Elle McPherson.

So there's New York, Paris and London ... all obviously fashionable cities. Well, with smaller fashion weeks popping up in spots from San Francisco to Mumbai, the net for model sightings is being cast wider and wider.

Take Miami, for instance. Once simply a party palace for glamour girls and Playboy bunnies taking a break from Los Angeles, Art Basel and other high-brow events are now bringing jetsetters from New York and London down for extended weekends. In fact, Miami is currently hosting its very own fashion week, featuring glamour-gown designers Badgley Mischka.

Nicola Siervo, owner of two of Miami's most-talked-about spots, Italian restaurant Quattro Gastronomia Italiana and nightclub Mokai, says that models like his venues' "small and intimate feel that attracts a young and hip crowd." Siervo's Miami guests have included Alessandra Ambrosio, Gisele Bundchen and Karolina Kurkova.

But as for Pittsburgh? Well ... maybe someday.

I honestly have no idea why the paparazzi are suddenly following Alessandra Ambrosio around and I honestly don't care. It'd be like questioning why God dropped a giant pile of cash and a Ferrari in your driveway. Just take it and run. And if you have to shoot one or two cops in the process so be it. It's all good. Although I really don't understand why Alessandra is making out with this guy. If you interviewed her and asked what she looks for in a man she'd answer, "Short. And ugly. He has to be short and ugly. And he has to wear a woman's purse." I'd be just as perplexed if I saw her making out with a telephone booth.

Victoria's Secret Opens A One-Day, Invite-Only Pop-Up Store
19 June, 2007
Source: racked.com

Pop-up stores can be a great way for small designers to test the waters—or, like the Rembrandt Brilliant Mouth Experience, they can be pure marketing ploys. The Victoria's Secret pop up opening on June 26th falls solidly into the latter camp. Open for one day only, the Victoria's Secret Sexy Beauty Candy Store at 1657 Broadway and 52nd Street will offer the brand's "unique vision of 'sweets'" which is, of course, not anything edible but instead is "makeup and beauty products as candy for women" to celebs, models, VIPs, and magazine editors. At the event, staffers of the faltering company will debut a new fragrance, called Supermodel, as well as other body products and three new perfumes for their Pink line. We hope their experiment works—after all, don't more women need to be on team pink? We haven't batted for that them before, so to speak, but those VS ads are awfully convincing.

Remembering the words to his hit songs is not one of Bobby Brown’s prerogatives. Before the rapper was scheduled to perform at Stereo by the Shore in the Hamptons Saturday night, he partook in a 30-minute make-out session with girlfriend Alicia Etheridge - a longtime friend of his ex, Whitney Houston - in the back of a truck. When Brown finally stopped sucking face to sing “My Prerogative” onstage, one on looker told us, “he stopped singing after the second verse.” Brown then told the crowd, “Sorry, I forgot the words.” Snickering guests included Anna Anisimova and Alessandra Ambrosio.

Pure Ambrosio

She’s one of Brazil’s hottest exports, part of that master modeling class from the late ’90s that included Gisele Bündchen, Adriana Lima and Ana Beatriz Barros. But when she isn’t gracing the cover of the latest Victoria’s Secret catalog or starring in a Guess? or Armani A/X campaign, Alessandra Ambrosio often can be found on the beach in her native country’s idyllic seaside town of Florianópolis, catching a killer wave to feed her surfing addiction.

“Surfing is my passion,” Ambrosio says. “Well, surfing and music. When I’m working I’m always playing with the music and dancing around the studio.”

In the 10 years since Elite Model Management discovered Ambrosio at age 14, she has managed to artfully balance work and play. That beach house, for example? “I spend a lot of time there in January and February, because it’s too cold in New York,” she says. “So I’ll shoot a job for five days, then head down there for a week, then off to another job. I spend a lot of time on airplanes, but I can’t stay away from the beach too long.”

Not that she has time for leisurely visits. Ambrosio will rack up more frequent-flier miles when she heads to Miami this month as part of the Victoria’s Secret tour of “Very Sexy” cities. As one of the company’s Angel spokesmodels, Ambrosio will appear at the Lincoln Road location on Wednesday, April 11th, from noon to 2 p.m. to promote the launch of the lingerie megabrand’s Very Sexy makeup line. “I love being an Angel; it was the biggest goal of my career,” says Ambrosio, who first did the company’s famed fashion show in 2000, then was hired to appear in the catalog in 2001. “They always have the most beautiful girls and shoot in the most beautiful places. The shoots are always really upbeat, and the crew is like a little family, which is why the photographs are so beautiful.”

Ambrosio adds that she was only too happy to become more involved in the beauty side of Victoria’s Secret. “I’m a total girl that way,” she says. “They send samples of the new fragrance and all the eye shadows and creams and ask my opinion, and I love that. Recently a bag arrived with what seemed like 200 different makeup colors, and I spent the weekend with my friends trying everything.”

It’s ironic, Ambrosio says, that she finds herself in such a position at this stage of her life. “When I was 15, I was convinced that by the time I was 18 my career would be over and I would go back to school, because everyone tells you modeling is a very short career,” she says. “When I turned 18, I started thinking very seriously about it. But at 19 I did Guess? and Victoria’s Secret, and that’s when my career really began.”

Such a turning point is even more impressive when you consider Ambrosio’s humble—and humbling—beginnings. Elite first spied her in the Brazilian finals of its famed Elite Model Look contest, but unlike other success stories, Ambrosio didn’t win. “I was only 5’, 7 1/2” tall, the shortest girl there,” she remembers. “I was 14 years old, and I’d also recently lost one of my baby teeth.” Elite remembered the potential of Ambrosio’s sultry looks, however, and a year later signed her to a contract. “At that point I knew I wanted to be a model, and my family was so supportive. That counts for a lot in this business. Of course, it also helped that by the time I was 16, I’d grown another two inches.”

Ambrosio did editorial work for Brazilian Elle and Brazilian Marie Claire before being selected for more lucrative advertising work with Guess?, Calvin Klein and Armani A/X (she’s still doing the latter as one of the models who tops Giorgio’s list of favorites, having appeared in seven campaigns for the Italian designer). “I love his clothes because you always look cool, no matter whether it’s the casual stuff or a gown,” she says. “You know for sure you’re wearing something just right.”

On one of those ubiquitous airplanes, however, you’re likely to find Ambrosio in jeans and a sweat shirt, a look that can be perplexing to some fans. “I always find it a little funny when I’m recognized, because I could not look less like I do in the Victoria’s Secret catalog,” she says with a laugh. “They have that image of me in the lingerie, doing the sexy poses. I always hope I don’t disappoint them.”

For now Ambrosio is content to continue her work for both Armani A/X and Victoria’s Secret (she has three years remaining on that contract) as she peruses other projects in between catching the waves in Florianópolis. She also spends a lot of time with fellow model and best friend Ana Beatriz Barros, who signed with Elite the same day as Ambrosio. All of which prompts the question: What is it about Brazilian girls that makes them such great models? “It’s a very sensual place,” Ambrosio explains. “Everybody’s sensual, and we’re very comfortable with our bodies. We also have a wonderful mix of cultures—European, African, Brazilian Indian—which creates this very sultry, exotic look. So what can I say? In Brazil, everyone is beautiful.”

The twenty-six year old Brazilian was celebrating a belated birthday with her boyfriend and pals when the music of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers led her and her entourage to attempt to fell the fence dividing the VIP area and the main stage site at the desert festival.

One eyewitness says, “She seemed to be having a great time. At first she was all over her boyfriend and then she and a few others started pushing on the fence.

“Security guards quickly pounced and reprimanded the model and her party.

“Shortly after that she stumbled off into the night with her bearded boyfriend. There was no mistaking it was her. She was stunning. She was wearing barely-there denim shorts and a loose-fitting hippie-type top. She was obviously dressed for the scorching temperatures at the festival, but she still looked great.”

Well considering I just posted those dreadful Pamela Anderson pics, (which I’m sure caused a collective gasp of shock to all my fine readers, something was needed to counter the effects of such terrible images - pictures so horrid in fact, that the fabric of time and space themselves could unravel due to their mere existence. Victoria's Secret Goes Hollywood

Fashion Payola takes many forms:

There are the actresses paid by designers on the red carpet, the musicians whose tours have an unofficial sponsor, celebrity "guest designers" attaching to a line.

And then there's the straight up product placement, as masterfully demonstrated this month by Victoria's Secret.

This week's Entourage episode has a birthday party for Adrian Grenier sponsored by the flirty bra brand, with Alessandra Ambrosio helping him blow out the cake candles.

Also new this week is the Halle Berry movie Perfect Stranger, which takes place in an ad agency. The big client is V.S.; Heidi Klum has a guest role as herself.

Maybe the Geico cavemen won't get their own sitcom, but we bet the Victoria's Secret Angels are totally working on it...

'Goofy" Alba tops hot list

Jessica Alba may insist she’s really a “dork,” but the “Fantastic Four” star still has the readers of FHM magazine drooling over her bodacious bod. Alba topped FHM’s 2007 “100 Sexiest Women in the World” poll, bumping last year’s winner, Scarlett Johansson down to third place.

“People think of me as just a sexy girl,” Alba told InStyle magazine, “but I’m really goofy - like, super goofy.”
Not that she doesn’t understand what makes men weak in the knees.

“I had womanly curves at a young age,” the former “Dark Angel” beauty adds. “Usually, kid actors are a few years older than the roles they play. I was two or three years younger.”

“American Idol” cutie Katherine McPhee- with a hot new look and hit self-titled debut album - came in second to Alba in the “Sexy” poll and Tom Brady [stats]’s Brazilian boo, Gisele Bundchen, shot up from her 2006 standing as the 83rd sexiest woman to steal the No. 4 slot from Jessica Simpson. Simpson dropped down the list to 15th place this year.

Bundchen’s fellow Brazilian beauty, Victoria’s Secret model, Alessandra Ambrosio jumped into fifth place all the way from No. 56 last year.
Topping off FHM’s Top 10 are “The Illusionist” star, Jessica Biel; Victoria’s Secret catwalker Adriana Lima; globe-trotting do-gooder Angelina Jolie; “Pirates of the Caribbean” actress Keira Knightley; and Victoria’s Secret’s Marisa Miller.

The skinny on skinny models
ASHLEY AGUECI
ASSISTANT NEWS EDITOR

For years, much controversy has surrounded super skinny models and the prevention of eating disorders within the fashion industry. After the deaths of two South American models last year, designers are stepping up and taking a bold look at their moral responsibilities to the public.

It’s no longer just fashion that is presented on the runway; it is an entire lifestyle. How can anyone help but feel inadequate next to the body of Adriana Lima and the pre-coked out Kate Moss of the ‘90s?
Some influential changes have been made within our ever-so-thin obsessed culture. The Council of Fashion Designers held a breakfast on Monday, Feb. 5 to introduce a formal health initiative that seeks to educate both models and agents alike on the importance of proper nutrition. At the meeting, both fruit cups and croissants were served while fashion industry officials ensured that they would monitor the industry for any starving youth. A lot of food probably went to waste that day.

Despite the discussions surrounding underweight models, many designers continue to feature them on the runway. Kimora Lee Simmons’s line is an exception to this trend. Her street-wear style brand, Baby Phat, showcases more curvy figures on the runway, but it will still be a long time before you’ll see a catwalk revolution that applauds plus sizes, busty bosoms, and plenty of junk in the trunk. Heaven forbid Versace or John Galliano made a dress that was actually flattering on the body of an average woman.

Oh, how RuPaul was correct in identifying the importance of supermodels to our disturbingly self-obsessed world. Do you think he meant to delve deep into the human psyche with lyrics like “wet your lips and make love to the camera”? Highly doubtful, but the song perpetuates an ever-growing belief that waif-sized models are the epitome of beauty.

The world's first ban on overly thin models occurred in Madrid last September. Madrid's Fashion Week turned away underweight models whose body mass index was less than 18 after protests that girls and young women were trying to copy their rail-thin looks and developing eating disorders to do so.

Organizers for Madrid’s fashion week said they wanted to project an image of beauty and health rather than a frail look. Madrid's regional government, which sponsored the show and imposed various restrictions, said that while it did not blame designers and models for anorexia, the fashion industry still had a responsibility to portray healthy body images. "Fashion is a mirror and many teenagers imitate what they see on the catwalk," said regional official Concha Guerra.

Despite all the discussion around underweight models and the importance of healthy living habits in the fashion industry, organizers of fashion shows in London, New York, and Milan have refused to do the same.

Australian fashion industry leaders will hold a forum to discuss the question of underweight models later this month, and may impose a minimum body mass index similar to the one introduced for the Madrid Fashion Week last year.

The worldwide controversy over underweight fashion models sparked more debate when it was reported that a Uruguayan model, Eliana Ramos, 18, died of heart failure on Tuesday. Local media reported that she may have died after suffering complications of an eating disorder. Six months ago, her sister Luisel, 22, died of heart failure due to not eating for several days. Back in November a Brazilian model, Ana Carolina Reston, died after reportedly eating nothing but apples and tomatoes.

The deaths sparked an international debate about the ethics of using models with "size zero" measurements: a 56-centimetre waist–the average measurement of an eight-year-old girl.

It is not only the fashion industry but the Hollywood figure that has led females and males alike to moan and groan about their bodies. Shrinking celebs are on the cover of every major magazine being praised for their post-break up bods. Shedding pounds has been given this eerie power to stand out in a crowd. It is the negative ideals of body image that have some members of the fashion industry worried.

Being super slim hasn’t always been fashionable. But with recent beauty icons donning noticeably svelte frames, it has become in vogue to participate in the shrinking frame fad. Some of today’s most sought after celebrities do not conform to the twig-like model physique. Take America Ferrera, J.Lo, and Scarlett Johnasson, who represent the female body in all its glory. However, how often are bodies like those finding themselves gracing the runway?

Weight has always been an issue, but it has now become an obsession. We consume every bit of the “thinner” lifestyle choice that can be found: from celebrity diet books and exercises, magazines promising the secrets of celebrity diets, and watching weight-loss reality shows, we have only perpetuated the waif-like body physique that we so whole-heartedly claim to hate.

Like RuPaul’s song says: “It don’t matter what you wear/ They’re checking out your savoir faire/ And it don’t matter what you do/ ‘Cause everything looks good on you.” And that is the unfortunate reality of the fashion industry. Everything looks seemingly better on a bone rack. I wonder if those clothes are really flying off the shelves when people realize they just don’t exactly fit into them like Alessandra Ambrosio?

Alessandra Ambrosio and company boggle the mind

Alessandra Ambrosio, Karolina Kurkova, Isabel Goulart, and Selita Ebanks made an appearance at a Victoria’s Secret store to promote the new Secret Embrace collection. The day they figure out how to sell women’s underwear without supermodels is the day you’ll find me locked in my closet weeping. I don’t understand why they don’t just have supermodels sell everything. I don’t have a cat, but I’d still probably buy cat food if Alessandra told me to. She wouldn’t even have to say anything. She could just open her mouth and purr and I’d start throwing money in her general direction while yelling, “I’ll take ten!”

Hot Supermodels Sell Bras

There really shouldn't be any explanation needed as to why you're looking at photos of smoking hot Victoria Secret Supermodels. If there is, well, you're in the wrong place. Izabel Goulart, Karolina Kurkova, Alessandra Ambrosio and Selita Ebanks activated their wonder twin powers of hotness to help launch something called the Secret Embrace Bra. And if you've read this far and haven't furiously started clicking on the photos, then, again, you're probably in the wrong place.

Victoria's Secret Launches Secret Embrace and BellaSugar Was There!

Yesterday I was lucky enough to attend the exciting Victoria’s Secret launch for their Five New Secret Embrace Bras. The event took place at the huge two-floor VS store in NYC where four of the gorgeous Victoria's Secret Angels, Karolina Kurkova, Alessandra Ambrosio, Izabel Goulart, and Selita Ebanks, were in attendance.

Not only did I get to meet the models, but also I was able to speak with each of them one on one. Talk about nerve racking! However, once I got started I realized that I had no reason to be intimidated - these women were nothing but sweet, articulate and professional.

The event began with a photo op of the models in their designated colors followed by a move upstairs where interviews and autograph signings took place. It ended with a song, strawberry cake and champagne, in celebration of Karolina Kurkova's birthday.

The bras range in price from $42-$51 and after feeling them, I can't wait to get one. You may remember me mentioning it in my recent post about Oscars swag, but if not, they are one single piece of fabric that is: seam free, tag free and stitch free. When they are on, they look and feel invisible.

The bras are currently available in stores and online in an assortment of Spring colors in sizes 32A-38DD, depending on style and color.

As you all know, I have been conducting exclusive model interviews for my Model of the Week feature. Stay tuned for more exciting coverage of these Angels in weeks to come where only on FabSugar can find we find out their guilty pleasures, secrets to beautiful hair, skin...and more!

Ideal body type undergoes changes in Europe, not U.S.
By Missy Paniaguas

Watching Tyra Banks parade around in a swimsuit on her talk show, proudly announcing "kiss my fat ass" to the world, I couldn't help but feel as though she thought of herself as a Joan of Arc for fat women everywhere.

And Tyra is not fat.

Despite laughing at the deluded self-absorbed supermodel, I wondered if Tyra inadvertently was making a point: Are fat women everywhere being persecuted?

Or worse yet, are average-sized women? Just where is the bar when it comes to woman's weight in order to be considered beautiful?

Using the body mass indicator, the healthiest range occurs from 18.5 to 24.9; anything less is underweight and anything over is overweight. BMI is calculated using a formula involving height and weight.

Tyra, at 5 feet 10 inches, weighs in at 161 pounds, according to Tyra Banks in People magazine. Her BMI falls in the ideal range at 23.1

Victoria's Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio has a BMI of 16.1 and Adriana Lima has a BMI of 16.4, both clearly underweight according to World Health Organization.

For those women to be on the lowest end of healthy, they would need to gain 15 pounds. It is confusing why such unhealthy bodies are considered ideal. BMI's lower than 18.5 for women are at risk for amenorrhoea, difficulty fighting off infection, increased risk of heart disease and osteoporosis.

I remember growing up when Cindy Crawford was the epitome of female beauty. Now, we've traded curves and muscles for ribcages and backbones.

During New York Fashion Week last week, the models that walked the runways were scary looking: rail thin, sunken eyes, somber look. Considering fashion is a business where they want to persuade others to buy their look, I do not understand the appeal of "heroin chic." Why would I want to look like I'm on drugs?

After Madrid Fashion Week, Spanish designers set a BMI limit of 18 for runway models. The Italian fashion industry has agreed not to hire models younger than 16, and to require models prove they do not suffer from an eating disorder with medical documents.

In America, however, the Council of Fashion Designers of America released a set of guidelines for models. The guidelines are not enforced and are only suggestions, rather than legitimate rules. According to CNN, none of the guidelines mention anything about BMI, either.

While I think it is great that the fashion industry is finally addressing this issue, the "thin is in" mentality is already engrained in everyone's minds.

The number of times I have seen a man reject a healthy-sized woman because she was "too big" would be close to the price of a Christian Dior purse. T-shirts with the phrase "no fat chicks" are stamped and sold across the country.

I can recall a time in sixth grade where my friends and I would suck in our stomachs around boys because it "would make them like us more."

Our generation has grown up expecting beautiful women to not only be physically fit, but tiny. Any mediocre body type is stigmatized as fat, chubby or thick.

Some women naturally are thin, but the majority are not. It is time to embrace healthier beauty icons, like Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez, and not force guilt on the women who cannot squeeze into size 2 jeans.

People look their best when they are at their healthiest. If we are more accepting of different body types, maybe there will finally be an end to the question, "Does this make me look fat?"

VALENTINE PASSIONS SOAR FOR TOP MODEL AND RUSSELL

Celebrities on both sides of the Atlantic were gearing up for a passionate Valentine's Day on Tuesday. Brazilian bombshell Alessandra Ambrosio led the way in New York where she shared lingerie shopping tips at the Victoria's Secret store.

The stunning model, who sent pulses racing in a sizzling red dress, thrilled onlookers as she blew kisses in the shop on Valentine's eve.

Meanwhile big-haired comedian Russell Brand was on the receiving end of some seductive advances in the UK. The 31-year-old who is presenting Wednesday night's Brit awards, was joined by two burlesque dancers bearing heart-shaped balloons at a pre-ceremony photocall.

Russell isn't holding out for a romantic time, however. "I've never had a good Valentine's Day and I expect that, true to form, this will be another sad, heartbreaking affair," he told the Daily Mirror. Currently single, he is keen to have a steady girlfriend as his mum wants him to settle down, "and is on my case for grandchildren," he joked. Top of his date wish-list is fellow comedian and Royle Family star Caroline Aherne, followed by Sienna Miller - who he is yet to meet, but says he'll be "keeping an eye out or two" for her at the Brit Awards.

AskMen.com’s Top 99 Most Desirable Women list first emerged as an attempt to counterbalance the surplus of “Most Sexy” and “Most Beautiful” lists published by other men’s lifestyle outlets. In casting their votes for the annual Top 99 Most Desirable Women, AskMen.com readers are asked to look beyond the nominees’ surface assets and take into account the character traits that they would prize in a girlfriend or wife, such as strength of personality, ambition or intelligence.

I’m confident that your readers will be happy to hear the good news. I have attached an exclusive Top 99 web banner should you choose to share to post the news.

Guy on a Plane

....On board: I was expecting Cinemax After Dark—velour couches, maybe a hot tub—but it's a standard 737, no room for impromptu pillow fights. To make matters worse, I'm in the absolute ass back of the aircraft, by the crapper. This sucks. I'm saved by a publicist who asks if I want to come up to first class. Oh, God, please. (I say it just like that.) It's overwhelming—a sea of shiny-haired heads and tanned limbs splayed across armrests. It smells like honeysuckle, at least in my memory. The chatter of Brazilian accents sounds like angels singing. I ask pointless questions, smile, nod, hit on Alessandra Ambrosio............
