That’s right, $1 billion. “This year we wanted to move the show to someplace different,” says Monica Mitro, Victoria’s Secret executive vice president of communications. “We started in New York and were in Los Angeles the past two years. … We heard about the renovations at the Fontainebleau, and it seemed like the perfect fit. "She gained quite a lot of weight" during her pregnancy, Carvalho said. "She was indulging herself in delicious Brazilian food [and] she had to pay the price." Ambrosio admits she enjoyed "a lot of ice cream," but says "there's no magic" to bouncing back - just hard work. But the pressure was on for Ambrosio, thanks to an intense precedent set by fellow VS Angel Heidi Klum. Excess baby weight seemed to melt off the mother of three, who gave birth to son Henry less than two months before the 2005 runway show. "It was amazing," recalls Manhattan's David Kirsch, who served as Klum's trainer. "She had worked so hard and she looked gorgeous." Kirsch put Klum through the paces with cardio workouts, circuit training and a strict diet, and earned quite a reputation as a post-baby body trainer. Kirsch stopped working with the 35-year-old model after she relocated to the West Coast, but still continues to help new moms and non-moms alike with his personal training sessions. "Not all mothers out there are meant to look like Heidi," he says, "but it's possible for everyone to get back to fitness relatively quickly." Carvalho agrees: "It's a hard job ... but I love the big challenge." Keeping a runway-ready body is always a challenge, according to Ambrosio, who admits, "I still sneak some [Brazilian food] in.” And she's still working out for two hours a day, every day. "We have moved off of our brand heritage," she said in a conference call with analysts. "We use the word 'sexy' a lot and really have forgotten the ultra-feminine." Victoria's Secret has long toed the line between seductive and sleazy, and its recent disappointing financial performance suggested that it had veered off course. Its parent company, Limited Brands, reported Wednesday that Victoria's Secret's fourth-quarter revenue rose to $1.89 billion. But sales at stores open at least a year, a key measure of a retailer's health, declined 8 percent. The company also said it will slow plans for new stores and remodels. The chain has about 1,000 stores, mostly in the United States. "I think it's a very good decision on their part," said C. Britt Beemer, head of America's Research Group, a firm that studies consumer behavior. "Sometimes sex doesn't sell as well to a woman as it does to the men." Turney said the brand's original storyline was of a to-the-manor-born Londoner named Victoria whose lacey underthings, we assume, were her little secret. That according to AskMen.com's 2008 poll in which five million votes were cast over a six week period. Voters were asked "to look beyond sex appeal and beauty to pick women who have the characteristics they value in a potential companion, like intelligence, humor, charisma, and ambition."
Heigl, 29, rises to the top this time after bowing on the list in 2006 at No. 57, and hitting No. 39 in 2007. But 2008 was Katherine's year. It saw her break into the small cadre of Hollywood's leading ladies with Knocked Up, and cement herself as a television star with her first Primetime Emmy for Grey's Anatomy.
She is followed on this year's list by Brazilian supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio, one of Victoria's Secret's few 'Angels,' who last year landed at No. 6 on the list. British actress Kate Beckinsale, last year's No. 16, who recently appeared in Click and Vacancy, is this year's No. 3.

10 January, 2008 Victoria's Secret Supermodels Marisa Miller and Alessandra Ambrosio recently hit the beaches of St. Barts for this year's swimwear catalogue photo shoot. 29-year-old Marisa has featured in many swimwear photo shoots for Sport's Illustrated and Victoria's Secret and will be featuring on this year's swimwear catalogue cover for Victoria's Secret: "I just found out I got the cover of swimwear today, so it's huge to be on the cover of one of the Victoria's Secret catalogues, so I'm really excited," she said enthusiastically. "I'm a beach girl, so I love seeing all the new swimwear and trying on the different suits. I'm definitely in my element," she added. This latest collection is the first Victoria's Secret swimwear line to be available in stores. All other collections have only been available through the catalogue. "Having swimwear in the stores is awesome, because the girls can go into the stores and try on the suits and it is easier than ordering from the catalogue because you can go in and mix and match yourself," Miller said. Brazilian model Alessandra Ambrosio, 26, said of the new collection - "It's a beautiful collection. All new (styles) - metallic, stripes, polka dots. You are going to see a lot of new things." The 2008 Victoria's Secret Swim Catalogue will heat up nearly 10 million mailboxes in early January and will be available in 350 stores in the US. |

Thank you messages can be let in the comments section ;) Anyway, back to the point: Some women may prefer to buy bathing suits online to avoid the trauma of trying them on every spring, but here are a few reasons why I'm excited about this news. I've always thought a lot of the clothing, particuarly the bathing suits, was very cute, as well as affordable (particularly when items go on sale at the end of the season!). However, sizing is always a issue, especially with itsy, bitsy bikinis. Even though some of the tops from Victoria's Secret come in bra sizes, the amount of coverage varies from suit to suit, and that can lead to "accidents." Unless you like the bottom to be "very tiny," like Miss Ambrosio, you probably want something that fits. A large can easily look like a small when it comes to swimwear. You can't judge it by looking at it on a super-skinny model on the Web site, especially since I've heard they tailor a lot of their clothing to fit the models (making every regular woman who orders it out of luck!). But alas, now you will be able to make sure it is the perfect suit for you (and probably mis-match top and bottom sizes if you need to) and ensure you won't have to sacrifice time and money for return shipping. And now for the bad news: It's doubtful any of this will be useful to you if you live in the midstate. I called both Harrisburg and Capital City malls, who both said the stores are not large enough to carry the line. But, we should probably hold out hopes for King of Prussia. The sales person I talked to today said she wasn't sure what they would have in the store, which is better than a resounding 'No.' I sure hope Miss Ambrosio didn't speak out of turn; if 350 stores plan to have the line, I would think King of Prussia would be among them! I really do hope this is a success, though, because maybe then Victoria's Secret will open clothing stores, too! |
